At 4.6% inflation in March, food is on fire

The further slowdown of inflationary pressures in March was confirmed by the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

As it states, the evolution of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of March 2023 (reference year 2020=100.0) is as follows:

From the comparison of the General CPI of the month of March 2023 with the corresponding Index of March 2022, an increase of 4.6% was found against an increase of 8.9% that occurred during the corresponding comparison of the year 2022 with 2021.

The General CPI during the month of March 2023, compared to February 2023, showed an increase of 1.2%, against an increase of 2.7% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the previous year.

The average CPI for the twelve months April 2022 - March 2023, compared to the corresponding Index for the twelve months April 2021 - March 2022, showed an increase of 9.2% against an increase of 3.5% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the twelve months April 2021 - March 2022 with the twelve months of April 2020 - March 2021

The individual figures show a drop in electricity prices by 25.8% and in heating oil by 22.1%. On the contrary, the prices of solid fuels go up by 24% and LPG is more expensive by 16.4%.

Food prices continue to rise: dairy and eggs show price increases of 23.1%, meat 19.8%, oils and fats 17.5%.

Household direct consumption items are 17.8% more expensive than last year.

Fire in transport prices. Travel by plane and taxis are more than 32% more expensive, 12.8% inflation in coastal ferries.

Comparison of March 2023 with February 2023

The increase of the General CPI by 1.2% in the month of March 2023, compared to the corresponding Index of February 2023, came mainly from the changes in the following groups of goods and services:

Of the increases in indicators by:

0.1% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, mainly due to price increases in: bread and cereals, beef, pork, cured meats, cheeses, preserved or processed vegetables, coffee. Part of this increase was compensated by the decrease in prices mainly in: fresh fish, yogurt, olive oil, fresh vegetables.
1.2% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, due mainly to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).
29.4% in the Clothing and Footwear group, due to some prices returning to pre-winter sale levels.
1.2% in the group Durable goods-Household goods and services, due to a return of prices to the levels before the winter sales and due to an increase in prices mainly in household items of immediate consumption.
0.3% in the Health group, mainly due to an increase in prices in hospitals and clinics.
0.8% in the Transportation group, mainly due to price increases in: used cars, air passenger tickets. Part of this increase was offset by the reduction in prices mainly for diesel.
0.6% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to an increase in prices in restaurants-patisseries-cafes-canteens, hotels-motels-inns.
0.8% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in other personal care items.
Of the reductions in indicators by:
1.9% in the Housing group, mainly due to a decrease in prices in: natural gas, heating oil.
0.4% in the Communications group, mainly due to a decrease in prices for telephone services.

Comparison of March 2023 with March 2022

The increase of the General CPI by 4.6% in the month of March 2023, compared to the corresponding Index of March 2022, came mainly from the changes in the following groups of goods and services:

Of the increases in indicators by:
14.3% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due mainly to price increases in: bread and cereals, meats (general), fish (general), dairy and eggs, oils and fats, fruits (general), vegetables (general) , sugar-chocolates-sweets-ice creams, other foods, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices.
3.7% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, due mainly to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).
14.4% in the Clothing and Footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.
11.0% in the group Durable goods-Household goods and services, due to price increases mainly in: furniture and decorative goods, household appliances and repairs, glassware-tableware and houseware, household goods of immediate consumption, household services.
5.6% in the Health group, mainly due to price increases in: pharmaceutical products, medical products, medical-dental and paramedical services, hospital care.
1.9% in the Transportation group, due mainly to price increases in: new cars, used cars, mopeds-motorcycles, car parts and accessories, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, taxi passenger tickets, air passenger tickets, tickets passenger transport by ship. Part of this increase was compensated by the decrease mainly in fuel and lubricant prices.
2.9% in the Leisure-Cultural activities group, mainly due to price increases in: small leisure items-flowers-pets, cinemas-theatres, stationery and design materials, package holidays.
2.2% in the Education group, mainly due to price increases in: primary education fees, secondary education fees.
7.5% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to price increases in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes-canteens, hotels-motels-inns.
6.2% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in: hair salons and personal care stores, other personal care items, health insurance premiums
From the reduction of the index by:

10.4% in the Housing group, mainly due to a decrease in prices in: electricity, heating oil. Part of this increase was offset by the increase in prices mainly in: house rents, house repair and maintenance, utilities, natural gas, LPG, solid fuels.
1.9% in the Communications group, mainly due to a decrease in prices for telephone services.
At 5.4% the harmonized index

The evolution of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HPI) for the month of March 2023 (reference year 2015=100.0) is as follows:

The HICP for the month of March 2023, compared to the corresponding Index of March 2022, showed an increase of 5.4% against an increase of 8.0% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the year 2022 with 2021.

The HICP during the month of March 2023, compared to February 2023, showed an increase of 1.6% against an increase of 2.7% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the previous year.

The average HICP for the twelve months of April 2022 - March 2023, compared to the corresponding Index for the twelve months of April 2021 - March 2022, showed an increase of 9.2% against an increase of 2.7% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the twelve months of April 2021 - March 2022 with the twelve months of April 2020 - March 2021.
