The situation of the Greek banks is mentioned in an article of the economic newspaper of Dusseldorf Handelsblatt. "As recently as mid-2015, the Greek financial system was on the verge of collapse.
The turmoil in the European banking sector is now creating new concerns that Greek institutions will once again face major problems. The head of the Central Bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras, however, does not see such a risk. "Greek banks are more resilient than a few years ago and have more room to absorb the effects of a financial crisis," Yiannis Stournaras told Handelsblatt.
The banks have made "significant progress in cleaning up their balance sheets (of non-performing loans) and have a lot of liquidity thanks to the increase in deposits and access to capital markets", he added (...) And indeed the four systemic Greek banks have exceeded largely the turmoil of the crisis years between 2010-2018. (... ) Finance Minister Christos Staikouras also sees the banks in good condition, but urges vigilance in the face of "global uncertainty and new challenges": "The government is monitoring developments in close cooperation with the supervisory authorities and will do everything ,what is possible to ensure the stability of the Greek financial sector".
