The amendment of the European People's Party (EPP) was voted in the Plenary of the European Parliament, according to which funds should be immediately mobilized to strengthen the capacities and infrastructure at the borders, thus paving the way for the financing of the fence on the Evros.
Essentially, the famous "Papadimoulis amendment", which was passed on March 29, is now put on hold, in order not to use European funds for the construction of fences on the borders of the European Union.
Now, the issue will be processed again in the European Parliament, taking into account the existing text of the EPP amendment and not the one with the previous wording of the "Papadimoulis amendment".
Specifically, in the Plenary of the European Parliament today, in the vote on the "Guidelines for the 2024 Budget - Section III", the EPP amendment on the financing of infrastructure at the external borders was voted in favor, with 322 votes in favor, 290 against and 20 abstentions, with paragraph 49 which includes the so-called "Papadimoulis amendment" to be repealed and to amend paragraph 23 of the text that had been formulated at the initiative of the shadow rapporteurs of the European Left, the Socialists, the Eurogroup of Emmanuel Macron Renew Europe and the Greens.
ND MEP Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou in a post on Twitter says:
Today the European Parliament gave a resounding response, as the Papadimoulis amendment for the non-financing of the Evros fence was defeated and the EPP amendment allowing the financing of related infrastructure was voted in favor. We continue, for Greece".
