India will become the world's most populous country by mid-2023, surpassing China, according to estimates released by the United Nations.

India's population will reach 1.4286 billion, compared to China's 1.4257 billion, according to the world population report released by the United Nations Population Fund.

The United States comes in a distant third, with an estimated population of 340 million, according to the data, which is based on information available through February 2023, according to the report.

Demographers had predicted, using earlier UN data, that India would overtake China in population this month. But the latest report by the world body does not specify the date on which the change will occur.

Although India and China will have more than a third of the world's population, estimated to reach 8.045 billion, population growth in both these Asian countries is slowing, at a faster rate in China than in India.

Last year China's population fell for the first time in six decades, a historic turn that is expected to mark the beginning of a long period of decline in the number of its citizens, with profound consequences for its economy and the world.

India's annual population growth has averaged 1.2 percent since 2011, compared with 1.7 percent in the previous 10 years, according to government data.
