Twenty-four hours after the huge explosion that blew up a four-story building in Marseille, rescue teams have discovered a third body in the debris, out of the eight people considered missing.
After the news, Marseille mayor Benoît Payan said the evidence should be viewed with caution: "We can't say if they were residents or visitors, for example," he said.
The first two bodies have yet to be identified, he said. Five people are still missing under the rubble of the building that collapsed like a paper tower at 17 rue Tivoli. A person who was thought to be missing in a building next to the one that collapsed in central Marseille on Sunday "appeared to his relatives", the prosecutor's office said. in a statement on Monday, so she is not listed as missing.
"Given the particular difficulties of the operation, the recovery [of the bodies from the scene] will take time," the fire service said in a brief statement shortly after 1 a.m. Monday after the discovery of the first two bodies. It will then be up to the forensic services to identify the bodies.
"We continue to do everything possible to carry out the rescue operations," Payan said.
