At least one person was killed and 30 injured, several seriously, when a passenger train carrying about 50 people derailed in the Netherlands early Tuesday after hitting a crane on the track, Dutch emergency services said.
Rescue teams were seen removing many of the injured overnight and working through fields in Voorschoten, a village near The Hague. The accident happened around 3:25 in the morning.
Nineteen people were taken to hospital while others received first aid at the scene.
Dutch Railways employee Carola Velderbos said the train collided with the crane and the driver and two carriers were among the injured.
The front carriage of the overnight train from Leiden to The Hague derailed, emergency services said.
The second wagon fell on its side and a fire broke out in the third, which was immediately extinguished.
