Belgian police raided the headquarters of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels yesterday, a source familiar with the matter told EURACTIV.com.
"Belgian police raided the first and third floors of the party headquarters on Rue du Commerce," the source said.
According to initial information, the police seized computers related to a financial fraud allegedly involving EPP staff.
The conservative EPP is the oldest and largest European political group, led by its president Manfred Weber.
According to the MDR THÜRINGEN (Thuringian Authorities), the investigation concerns the ongoing corruption process against the head of the state and the parliamentary group of the CDU of Thuringia, Mario Voigt, broadcasts EFSYN.
The EPP confirms the investigation and notes that the visit is linked to an ongoing investigation in Thuringia. At the same time, he points out that "the party cooperates in full transparency with the authorities involved, providing all relevant information and documents. As this is an ongoing legal investigation, the EPP will not comment further."
"According to the prosecution, the investigations are not directed against EPP employees so far. The investigation serves to seek evidence in the proceedings against Voigt. In addition, the police want to question potential witnesses on the spot in Brussels," commented Manfred Weber's spokesman.
"According to MDR THÜRINGEN's investigation, the ongoing raid also aims to examine the question of how long Voigt originally worked for the EPP and how much money he may have received during that time," he said.
