Finland will become the 31st member of the Atlantic Alliance today, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced, confirming the announcement made by the Finnish presidency.
"Tomorrow, we will welcome Finland as the 31st member," Jens Stoltenberg said, clarifying that the Finnish flag would be raised at the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels in the afternoon.
"Truly, it's a historic day," he said. For this reason, the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Grusko, announced the strengthening of Russian military power in the western and northwestern regions.
Finland has a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, and with its entry into the Alliance, the kilometers of border shared by NATO member states with Russia will almost double.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said last year that Russia was taking "appropriate countermeasures" and would form 12 units and divisions in its western military district.
Grusko told RIA: “We will strengthen our military capabilities in the western and northwestern direction. In the event that the forces and resources of other NATO members are deployed in Finland, we will take additional measures to reliably ensure Russia's military security."
