The Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey met in Brussels and made a mutual agreement to support the candidacies of the two countries to the UN and the International Maritime Organization.
As it became known, Mr. Dendias and Cavusoglu, agreed that Ankara will vote for Greece for its candidacy to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.
Athens, for its part, will support the Turkish candidacy for the position of secretary general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
It is the first time that the two foreign ministers meet after the earthquake in southern Turkey, when Nikos Dendias had also traveled to the neighboring country to see the extent of the disaster.
Cavusoglu's statements after the meeting
What Mevlut Cavusoglu said, addressing Nikos Dendias, after their meeting in Brussels, was positive.
"Thank you very much, dear Niko. You summarized what we discussed very well, but first of all I saw you again. And let me thank the Greek government and Greece for extending your support and solidarity to us after the earthquakes. It was very kind of you to visit us in person in Antioch. We were again very grateful," the Turkish Foreign Minister initially stated.
He then said: “Please convey our condolences to Greece and the Greek people for the horrific train accident. President Erdogan and we did not hesitate to give permission for the father of the son who died in the accident to return and this is a sign of trust and I am very happy that we have a much better atmosphere in our relations. And this positive atmosphere was reflected in our cooperation on international platforms and as Nikos mentioned about this mutual support, we agreed to support our candidacies".
"And I hope that we continue such collaborations on other platforms as well and that this is reflected in bilateral relations as well. We agreed to meet again soon and I will be very happy to host you in Turkey, I think it is your turn, or wherever else we are given the opportunity", concluded Cavusoglu in his statements after his meeting with Dendia in Brussels
