Last year moved close to the record set by tourism in our country in 2019, while the first figures for tourist traffic in the first two months of 2023 send positive signs.
In more detail, according to the revised data of the Bank of Greece (Bank of Greece), a total of 29.875 million tourists visited our country in 2022, a number that is increased compared to the preliminary measurement for 27.835 million visitors. In comparison, in 2019, a year that is considered a milestone for Greek tourism, 34.004 million tourists arrived in Greece, while in the more difficult 2021, due to the pandemic, 15.246 million tourists arrived.
Accordingly, as shown by the final data of the BoE, travel receipts were also revised upwards, as they amounted to 17.676 billion euros (from 17.631 billion euros in the preliminary measurement) showing an increase of 68.3% compared to 2021. In comparison, in 2019 travel receipts were 18.179 billion euros, while in 2021 they reached 10.503 billion euros.
Therefore, compared to 2019, in 2022 the travel traffic showed a decrease of 12.1%, which, however, was not reflected accordingly in the travel receipts which, always compared to 2019, showed a decrease of 2.8%.
Compared to 2021, travel receipts increased by 68.3%, driven by a 47.2% increase in receipts from residents of the EU 27 countries, which stood at €10 billion, representing 56 .6% of total receipts, as well as the 105.4% increase in receipts from residents of countries outside the EU 27, which amounted to 7,251.9 billion euros

However, the total number of overnight stays increased by 64.7% in 2022 and reached 220,213.1 thousand overnight stays, compared to 133,734.9 thousand in 2021. This fact is due to the increase in overnight stays by residents of the EU 27 countries by 49.5%, as well as overnight stays by residents of countries outside the EU 27 by 98.9%.
Overnight stays from Germany and France rose by 43.4% and 31.1% respectively, while from non-EU 27 countries, overnight stays from the UK increased by 132.2%, from the US by 116, 3%, while those from Russia decreased by 70.7%.
